The "Air Bud" franchise is making a comeback with "Air Bud Returns," set for a nationwide theatrical release on August 21. This new film is billed as a relaunch, not a direct sequel, continuing the legacy of the basketball-playing Golden Retriever, Buddy. The story unfolds in Fernfield, Buddy's original hometown. It centers on 13-year-old Jacob, who dreams of basketball stardom following his father's passing. Upon moving to his father's childhood home in Fernfield, Jacob finds an old "Air Bud" VHS tape revealing his father played alongside the famous canine. A bond is soon formed with a stray golden retriever, whom Jacob names Buddy. Together, they embark on a journey to assemble a team of underdogs for the Christmas tournament. The film aims to inspire viewers to believe in family legacies and play from the heart. Directed and written by franchise creator Robert Vince, "Air Bud Returns" stars Tracy Ifeachor, Edwin Lee Gibson, Tyler Labine, and Aydin Artis. The August 21 release date intentionally coincides with National Golden Retriever Day. "Air Bud has, for nearly three decades, stood for heartwarming family values, reminding us to 'play from the heart' and 'when given the opportunity, to always take the shot,'" stated Vince. He added that the film "honors that legacy while introducing the next generation to Buddy on the big screen."
