The iconic Air Bud franchise is preparing for its 15th cinematic installment, "Air Bud Returns," slated for a theatrical release on January 22, 2027. This upcoming film signifies a major shift, as it is being produced as an independent movie, diverging from its long-standing association with Disney.

Director Robert Vince, also CEO of Air Bud Entertainment, highlighted the strategic demographic timing for this release. He believes the original audience, now parents and grandparents, will introduce the franchise to their children, creating a shared theatrical experience. This approach aims to recapture the magic of the first film, released in 1997.

"Air Bud Returns" is described not merely as a sequel but as a theatrical reimagining, fitting into the "lega-sequel" category. The narrative consciously references the original film, featuring a statue of the first Air Bud and the new canine star finding inspiration by watching the 1997 movie on VHS.

The film's indie status is further emphasized by its distributor, Cineverse, known for the horror franchise "Terrifier." While Cineverse typically employs minimal marketing spend for niche genres, they see "Air Bud Returns" as a family-friendly IP with a built-in fanbase, aiming to make its theatrical debut an event.

Cineverse actively sought the perfect canine talent for the role, receiving over 5,000 submissions for golden retrievers. This extensive search underscores the perceived audience demand and confidence in the film's potential box office success, signaling a desire for the return of the beloved Air Bud character.
