Melancholic songs have emerged on social media following the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by an immigration agent in early July. Jaime Velasquez, a Houston resident, utilized an AI song generator to compose a corrido, a traditional Mexican folk ballad, from Mr. Araujo's perspective.
Mr. Araujo was killed during a traffic stop in Houston's close-knit Magnolia Park neighborhood on July 7. This event deeply affected the community, with Mr. Velasquez expressing that the loss felt personal. He wrote the corrido in Spanish, detailing the morning of the incident from Mr. Araujo's point of view.
To create the music, Mr. Velasquez employed an AI tool named Zona, which allowed him to add instrumentals and select a voice for the composition. This fusion of traditional storytelling and modern technology offers a unique way to commemorate lives lost and process community grief.
