AI Revives Billy Joel's Lost 1971 Interview

A significant piece of music history is being revived through cutting-edge technology as a lost 1971 interview with Billy Joel is brought back to life using artificial intelligence. The documentary film, titled '1971: Billy Joel's Lost Interview,' is set to premiere at the LIMEHOF Music Documentary Film Festival.

The film's innovative approach involves creating an AI version of a 22-year-old Billy Joel, offering a visual representation from before his global fame. While the visual aspect utilizes AI, the documentary incorporates genuine audio from an interview conducted by Ed Mann on C.W. Post's WCWP radio station, specifically from the "That's Interesting" show, shortly after the release of his debut solo album, 'Cold Spring Harbor.'

Despite the use of his likeness and voice, the "Vienna" singer himself is not involved in the production of this 20-minute film, directed by Adam Ripp. This initiative highlights the growing possibilities of AI in preserving and sharing historical content.

Separately, there have been past attempts to create unauthorized biopics about Joel. In 2022, a planned biopic titled 'Piano Man' was announced, and more recently, a film called 'Billy and Me' was slated for production. Joel's representatives have previously stated that he does not grant life rights for such projects and has not authorized or supported them in any capacity.

This AI-driven documentary stands in contrast to the two-part HBO documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes,' released in July 2025, which received the musician's blessing. Joel had previously expressed reluctance for such projects but requested that the HBO documentary "just tell the truth."
