RGV: AI's Rise Means 'Bright Future' for Film, Industry's End

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has put forth a significant prediction regarding artificial intelligence's impact on filmmaking. He foresees AI transforming all facets of cinema, from scripting and production to editing and audience experience, by as early as the end of 2026. Varma suggests that accessible AI systems will enable filmmakers to achieve unprecedented capabilities.

These AI systems will not merely write screenplays but will develop and assess multiple story versions. The strongest narrative elements will be selected, creating a refined "survivor" screenplay. This technological shift is expected to reduce logistical challenges, such as those related to location and scheduling, allowing for more finished versions of films to be judged.

Post-production processes like editing, color grading, visual effects, and sound mixing could become a single, simultaneous loop. Varma also anticipates an end to "development hell," with completed works presented rather than mere proposals. While AI may make stunning visuals more accessible and less expensive, Varma cautions that "scarcity of taste" will remain the key challenge.

He further envisions a future where films are not fixed upon release, with technology potentially allowing for different versions to be presented to varying audiences.
