Stars Launch AI Consent Database for Artists

In response to the growing influence of artificial intelligence, a novel platform named rslmedia.org has been launched to empower artists. Co-founded by Cate Blanchett, this non-profit initiative allows creators to explicitly state their consent levels for AI to utilize their likeness, voice, or concepts. The system features three tiers: green for permission, yellow for conditional use (e.g., with payment), and red for outright prohibition.

Cate Blanchett introduced this human consent identifier at the European Parliament in 2024. She emphasized the need for consent-based safeguards to protect human rights, ensuring that technological advancements in AI do not outpace necessary protections. The platform aims to create a transparent database for AI companies, complementing emerging regulatory frameworks.

Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, also present at the presentation, described the tool not as a restriction but as a persuasive mechanism to encourage ethical AI practices. While some tech industry representatives voiced concerns about potential impacts on Europe's competitive edge, Soderbergh reassured attendees that AI has limitations, and that such tools provide necessary direction for creators.

The initiative is built on the principle that an individual's identity constitutes intellectual property. By providing a tangible and transparent method for recording consent, rslmedia.org seeks to establish a clear path for millions of creators navigating the evolving landscape of AI. The European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act, approved in 2024, provides a foundational regulatory framework that this initiative can work alongside.
