Despite this unpleasant experience, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." went on to have a successful seven-season run, forging its own path after being thrown off course by the events of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" in 2014. The series initially positioned the S.H.I.E.L.D. team as a cleanup crew for the Avengers, but as the Marvel Cinematic Universe evolved, the show was able to explore the deeper, more entrenched treachery of HYDRA in unique ways.
