Cruise's Call Linked Adam Sandler to 'Punch Drunk Love'

Adam Sandler recently recounted how Tom Cruise facilitated his introduction to director Paul Thomas Anderson, leading to their collaboration on the critically acclaimed film 'Punch Drunk Love.' During a conversation at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Sandler detailed receiving a surprise call from Cruise while filming 'Little Nicky' around the year 2000. Cruise, whom Sandler knew slightly, connected him with Anderson, a director Sandler had not previously heard of.

Anderson expressed admiration for Sandler's work and mentioned he had written a movie for him. Initially on his film set, Sandler agreed to hear Anderson out, leading to a conversation about the script. Sandler recalled being significantly impressed after watching Anderson's 1999 film 'Magnolia,' which heightened his eagerness to work with the director. He then contacted Anderson, expressing his readiness to read the script.

Reflecting on the filmmaking process, Sandler spoke highly of his rehearsal period with Anderson and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. He described extensive rehearsals at Anderson's home, working through scenes collaboratively.
