Actress Spencer Grammer's life took an unexpected turn six years ago following a stabbing incident in New York City. The event resulted in severed nerves and significant loss of feeling in her right hand, a condition from which she has not fully recovered.
As part of her rehabilitation, a kinesiologist suggested she take up a musical instrument. Grammer chose the guitar three years after the attack. This therapeutic endeavor eventually led her to pursue music professionally, forming the folk-rock duo Belle and Chain with collaborator Davis IL in 2025.
Grammer, who also pursued filmmaking and acting, finds music allows for deeper self-expression. She notes her roles often involved embodying others' visions, whereas her band enables her to explore facets of her own personality and interests.
Belle and Chain's recent single, "Laila," released on September 24, draws inspiration from Dolly Parton's "Jolene" and features unique instrumentation like the ondes martenot. The duo's aesthetic, including artwork for "Laila" and their debut "Don't You Worry Babe," is inspired by tarot cards.
The band is currently preparing for upcoming tour dates and is working towards the release of their debut album, anticipated for early 2027. Grammer hopes her journey inspires others to pursue their passions despite adversity.
