Actors Guild Pauses Talks, Studios Shift Focus to Writers
16 Mar
Summary
- Actors union and studios paused contract talks after five weeks.
- Negotiations will resume later this spring before June 30 deadline.
- Core issues include AI performers and streaming compensation.

Actors union SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have concluded a period of productive bargaining sessions for a new TV and theatrical labor contract. The formal negotiations will be paused, with plans to resume later this spring before the current agreement expires on June 30. This pause is to allow the studios to commence negotiations with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) this week.
The SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP committees engaged in talks for five weeks, extending beyond the originally scheduled period. While ongoing conversations will continue, the break allows for a shift in focus to the WGA's upcoming negotiations. The Directors Guild of America (DGA) is also slated to begin its talks later in May.
Central to the upcoming contract cycle are the core issues of artificial intelligence and streaming compensation. SAG-AFTRA is expected to push for significant clauses regarding "synthetic performers," or AI-generated actors, and modifications to the streaming compensation fund. The goal is to establish a more robust financial safety net for working actors, addressing declining residuals.
