Pratik Gandhi: Lost Roles for Not Looking 'Rich Enough'

Actors Pratik Gandhi and Arshad Warsi have recently spoken out about the appearance-based pressures prevalent in the film industry. These discussions emerged amidst a wider conversation about beauty standards in Bollywood, triggered by earlier remarks from Salman Khan concerning trolls targeting Katrina Kaif's postpartum appearance.

Gandhi shared his personal experience of being denied television roles early in his career because he didn't fit the mold of a 'rich look.' He expressed bewilderment at this arbitrary criterion, noting that casting calls still specify a preference for actors who appear wealthy.

Director Tigmanshu Dhulia connected this casting bias to India's historical preference for fair skin, suggesting that fair-complexioned and tall actors are often favored for affluent character roles. Arshad Warsi also stressed the necessity for actors to maintain a realistic perspective on their own appearance and the roles they can credibly portray, likening the request to play a character like Thor to a fool's errand.

Gandhi and Warsi are set to star together in Dhulia's upcoming crime drama, Ghamasaan. Their other upcoming projects include Warsi's appearance in Shah Rukh Khan's King and Gandhi's roles in Woh Ladki Hai Kahaan? and Hum Hindustani.
