Summary
- Extreme water restriction can cause dizziness and headaches.
- Dehydration is not a healthy fat-loss strategy for the public.
- Temporary shredded appearance comes from reduced body water.

Actor Vijay Deverakonda has disclosed an extreme method used for the film Liger, involving severe water restriction to achieve a shredded physique. He described cutting water intake down to 100-300 ml daily, even licking ice cubes hours before shoots to avoid drinking. This practice, while employed by some bodybuilders, is strongly advised against for the general public by health experts.
Consultant dietitian Garima Goyal stated that such short-term dehydration protocols are not healthy fat-loss strategies. She explained that while severe water restriction can temporarily enhance muscle definition by reducing body water, it leads to dehydration rather than meaningful fat loss. The risks associated with this practice include dizziness, weakness, headaches, and impaired concentration.
Dr. Amit Saraf emphasized that for most adults, 100-300 ml of water daily is far below normal requirements. Extreme restriction can disturb electrolyte balance, potentially affecting heart and nervous system function. Licking ice or drinking coconut water is insufficient to prevent severe dehydration. Warning signs like dark urine, dizziness, or rapid heartbeat should not be ignored, as severe dehydration can become a medical emergency.
