New York composer Joseph Branciforte has undertaken an ambitious project: recreating Taylor Deupree's 2002 ambient-glitch album, 'Stil.l,' with acoustic instrumentation. The original record was a significant work within the glitch movement, characterized by its digital origins and repetitive electronic samples. Branciforte's challenge was to translate this inherently digital soundscape into music performed by human instrumentalists, utilizing instruments such as the clarinet, vibraphone, and cello.
The process proved daunting, particularly after Branciforte discovered the original mix files for 'Stil.l' were unavailable. He meticulously transcribed the album from the finished recording, isolating frequency ranges for each track. He then assembled an ensemble of skilled musicians, including clarinetist Madison Greenstone and guitarist Ben Monder, to realize his exacting scores. Initially met with skepticism, the project began to win over doubters with its successful rendition of tracks like "Temper."
Branciforte's interpretation of "Temper" transformed the song's IDM-inspired elements into a contemporary classical piece through Greenstone's innovative clarinet techniques. Similarly, the track "Stil." was translated for vibraphone, creating an ethereal and floating sound. More complex pieces like "Recur" required additional instrumentation, including cello and flute, successfully mimicking the feel of a glitching CD through live performance.
