Women Speak Out: Shocking Abuse in Scottish Folk Music
22 Jan
Summary
- 81% of women musicians faced abuse in Scottish folk scene.
- Incidents included sexual assault and rape, mostly by peers.
- Many women left the scene due to feeling unsafe.

Research from the University of Glasgow has uncovered widespread harassment and sexual violence within Scotland's folk music scene. A survey of 409 women, predominantly musicians, teachers, and students, found that 81% had endured some form of abuse.
Incidents ranged from sexual comments and stalking to assaults and rape, with fellow musicians identified as the primary perpetrators. Researchers noted that 17% of participants reported experiencing sexual assault or rape, highlighting a critical workplace issue.
The male-dominated nature of the folk scene contributes to the normalization of such behaviors, according to the study. Consequently, some women have abandoned the scene entirely, representing a loss of valuable talent. The report recommends implementing codes of conduct and providing support for victim-survivors.
