The mockumentary series "Abbott Elementary" filmed an episode titled "Ballgame" during an actual Philadelphia Phillies game, a feat that earned director Randall Einhorn an Emmy nomination. The production team had to navigate the unpredictability of live events and elements at the ballpark.

Initial filming days utilized large silk screens for controlled audio and lighting. However, the actual game day proved too windy for these screens, a challenge Einhorn embraced, finding it enhanced the depiction of time passing. He also had to connect planned shots with unpredictable on-field actions, including coordinating pans from the field to the stadium's Jumbotron.

The episode incorporated unexpected real-game moments, such as Kyle Schwarber hitting four home runs when only one was scripted. This mockumentary format allowed for capturing genuine reactions from the cast, like actress Sheryl Lee Ralph's character's delight. Even a scene with Schwarber after the game was filmed under time pressure before stadium sprinklers activated.

Einhorn, known for his work on shows like "The Office" and "Modern Family," emphasized his meticulous planning for this challenging shoot. He found the experience pushed him to be an even more thorough planner, despite the inherent difficulties of filming within a live, unpredictable environment.
