The Royal Mint is commemorating 50 years of Aardman Animations, the Academy Award-winning studio famous for its stop-motion creations. Collectible 50p coins have been launched, featuring beloved characters such as Morph, Shaun the Sheep, Feathers McGraw, Wallace, and Gromit on the tails side. A selection of these coins will also showcase the designs in full color.
To mark the occasion, Aardman co-founder Peter Lord visited The Royal Mint to strike one of the initial 50p coins. The Bristol-based employee-owned company has been a staple of British entertainment since the 1970s, building a legacy through shows and films. This year, Aardman celebrates its golden jubilee with various events and a new film, Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom, slated for autumn release.
Rebecca Morgan, director at The Royal Mint, highlighted the profound nostalgia Aardman characters evoke, stating they are part of the fabric of British life. Peter Lord expressed pride in the celebration of Aardman's characters and studio artistry, noting the resemblance between The Royal Mint and the Aardman studio in their shared dedication to craft. The Royal Mint also announced its commitment to using recycled gold for its collectable gold coins by the end of 2026.
The Aardman 50p coins are available for purchase from 9am on Tuesday, June 9, via The Royal Mint's website. Options include brilliant uncirculated and color versions, as well as silver and gold editions. Prices start at £15 for a brilliant uncirculated coin and extend to £2,420 for a gold coin.
