Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has addressed the long-standing belief that his "3 Idiots" character, Phunsukh Wangdu, was based on activist Sonam Wangchuk. Speaking at the London India Film Festival, Khan clarified that this perception is a misconception.
Khan stated that he, director Rajkumar Hirani, and writer Abhijat Joshi were unaware of Sonam Wangchuk when developing the film. He emphasized that Wangchuk's work is commendable regardless of any connection to the character. Khan also conveyed his concern for Wangchuk's health, who has been on a hunger strike for 19 days as of 2026-07-17T04:16:25+00:00.
This clarification comes after recent discussions, including comments from actor Omi Vaidya, who supported Wangchuk. Notably, Wangchuk himself had previously stated that while the film might have been 'influenced,' it was not directly based on him. He expressed that he does not wish for people to accept things solely due to film association.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani are preparing for a sequel to '3 Idiots,' with principal photography scheduled to commence in late 2026.
