Summary
- The Odyssey's success highlights strong demand for 70mm IMAX.
- Limited 70mm IMAX locations exist due to high projector costs.
- IMAX CEO notes financial constraints prevent large-scale expansion.

Christopher Nolan's epic film "The Odyssey" has experienced a triumphant box office opening weekend, significantly bolstered by audience enthusiasm for premium formats, particularly 70mm IMAX. This specialized format, renowned for its immersive quality, is currently available in a limited number of over 40 locations across the United States.
Despite the soaring demand and critical acclaim for the 70mm IMAX experience, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond indicated that expanding the number of projectors presents significant financial challenges. He cited the substantial cost of each projector, approximately $50,000, along with the need for specialized infrastructure like large projection booths and heavy-duty logistics, such as forklifts, to handle film prints.
Gelfond explained that the economics of 70mm IMAX are difficult to scale. The model works best with extended playtimes, allowing theaters to recoup their investment over longer periods. He cautioned that the current business model is finite, and there are not hundreds of locations where such an investment would be financially viable, especially for shorter film releases.
Nonetheless, the success of "The Odyssey" has inspired some smaller theaters to invest in 70mm capabilities. The film's showings are reportedly sold out through August and September, indicating the strong financial viability for the few locations that can offer the format. Upcoming films like "Dune: Part Three" and "The Great Beyond" are also slated for 70mm IMAX releases, further fueling interest in this exclusive cinematic experience.
