Yuma, Arizona Sees Rare Monsoon Downpour, Receives Half of Annual Rainfall in a Single Day
10 Oct, 2025
Summary
- Yuma, Arizona received about half of its average annual rainfall in a single day in late September 2025
- The Southwest Monsoon Season has been largely dry for the past couple of years
- Experts are unsure about the unpredictable nature of the monsoon patterns in the region

As of October 10th, 2025, the Southwest Monsoon Season in Arizona has been largely dry, with a couple of significant outlier events in September that brought severe weather to the Phoenix region and heavy rain to parts of the Yuma area.
Yuma, Arizona, which holds the distinction of being the "sunniest city on earth" according to the Guinness Book of World Records, saw about half of its average annual rainfall of 3 inches in a single day at the end of September 2025. This rare monsoon downpour came as a surprise, as the region's "nonsoon" season has been known for its lack of rainfall in recent years.
Experts are puzzled by the unpredictable nature of the monsoon patterns in the Southwest. The Climate Assessment for the Southwest suggests that "there are no evident trends in annual monsoon strength, making it difficult to predict." Despite early suggestions that this year's monsoon season would not be as dry as the previous ones, it largely was, with the exception of the heavy rainfall event in Yuma.
