Winter Storm Watch: Southern Tier Braces for Blizzard

A winter storm watch has been issued for the Southern Tier, with heavy snow anticipated from late Saturday, January 24th, through Monday, January 26th. Travel is expected to be severely impacted, potentially becoming very difficult or impossible. Snowfall rates could exceed two inches per hour throughout Sunday, January 25th, with total accumulations ranging from 12 to 18 inches in certain locations.
Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a State of Emergency for New York in response to the impending winter storm. In Elmira, residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and be mindful of snowplows. The city is offering free parking at the Centertown Parking Garage from Saturday noon until Tuesday, January 27th, 7 a.m.
A public meeting in Corning concerning the Gibson Scrapyard site cleanup has been rescheduled to Tuesday, January 27th, at 5 p.m. due to the storm. AccuWeather projects lower snow accumulations for Elmira and Corning, with 3-6 inches expected on Sunday. Temperatures will remain cold, with highs near 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and are not expected to climb significantly higher than 20 degrees next week.
