West Bengal Braces for Week of Rain Amid Heat
5 Jun
Summary
- Light to moderate rain forecast across West Bengal this week.
- High temperatures and humidity to persist despite incoming showers.
- South and North Bengal under yellow alert with distinct regional hazards.

West Bengal can expect a week of light to moderate rainfall and scattered thundershowers, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While the rain offers temporary respite for daily commuters, persistent high temperatures and humidity are forecasted.
Kolkata's weather will feature partly cloudy skies, localized thunderstorms, and light rain. Daytime temperatures are projected to be around 37 degrees Celsius, and night temperatures near 29.8 degrees Celsius, both slightly above seasonal norms. Relative humidity will remain high, peaking at 86 percent, exacerbating outdoor discomfort.
The southwest monsoon is gathering momentum across the subcontinent, with favorable conditions for its advance into Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu within the next two to three days. Simultaneously, the monsoon has officially entered the southern peninsula as of June 4.
Both South and North Bengal are under a yellow alert from Thursday through next Wednesday due to distinct regional hazards. South Bengal anticipates thunderstorms with lightning, potentially causing localized damage to crops. North Bengal faces heavy downpours, gusty winds up to 50 kmph, and a high risk of lightning strikes, with rainfall expected between 7-11 cm daily.
Vulnerable populations, including infants and the elderly, are advised to take precautions against heat-related health issues due to the hot and humid conditions. Fishermen operating along the West Bengal coast have no active warning, as coastal conditions remain stable.
