Victoria Drenched: Record Spring Rains Soak State
4 Oct
Summary
- Mount Cowley recorded 192mm of rain in 72 hours.
- Briagolong set an October 72-hour rainfall record.
- Flood warnings issued for Wandocka due to swollen Thompson River.

Victoria experienced a deluge of record-breaking spring rains, leaving much of the state waterlogged. The Mount Cowley weather station, west of Lorne, registered the highest rainfall total with 192 millimetres over 72 hours ending Sunday morning. Nearby, Cowwarr Weir received 185 millimetres, and the Gippsland town of Briagolong shattered its October record for 72-hour rainfall, accumulating 182 millimetres.
Several locations, including Lakes Entrance and Horsham, surpassed their highest single-day October rainfall totals on Saturday. VicEmergency issued a watch-and-act warning for the Thompson River at Wandocka in Gippsland due to potential major flooding. Meteorologists attribute the heavy rain to a low-pressure system carrying tropical moisture.
Despite the significant rainfall, which broke records in some areas, meteorologists noted that such events are not entirely unprecedented in Victorian springs. A cold front is expected to bring isolated showers on Tuesday, but temperatures are predicted to rise significantly by the end of the week, with the city potentially reaching 27 degrees on Friday.
