Vibrant Onam Procession Braves Downpour in Kerala's Capital

As the Onam Week celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram are set to culminate on Tuesday, September 8, 2025, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the district, warning of heavy rains in the range of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.
The cultural procession, which will be flagged off by the Governor at 4 p.m., is expected to feature over 1,000 artists and 59 floats. The procession will showcase a diverse array of Kerala's art forms, including Pookavadi, Onapottan, Singari Melam, Chendamelam, African Band, Kiwi Dance, and Dragon Theyyam, among others. The floats will depict the state's heritage, cinema, literature, women empowerment, health, and safety messages.
Despite the threat of rain, elaborate arrangements have been made for the grand event. The arrival of the procession will be announced by 51 artists with an orchestra, and a special pavilion has been prepared for foreign tourists to view the festivities. The procession is expected to take about one-and-a-half hours to cross a point, offering a vibrant and memorable celebration of Onam in Thiruvananthapuram.
