Uttarakhand Schools Shut as Dehradun Swelters in Record Heat
27 Apr
Summary
- Dehradun recorded its highest temperature of the season at 39.2°C.
- Schools across Uttarakhand closed for students from Class 1 to 12.
- Rain and thunderstorms are forecast from April 28, offering potential relief.

Uttarakhand is currently experiencing intense heatwave conditions, with Dehradun reaching a season-high temperature of 39.2°C. This surge has prompted the district administration to order the closure of all schools and anganwadi centers on Monday to protect public health from heat-related illnesses.
The high temperatures are not limited to the plains; hill regions like Mukteshwar are also reporting unseasonably warm weather. This widespread warming is attributed by meteorologists to clear skies, prolonged dry spells, and a lack of western disturbances.
However, a shift in weather is expected soon. From April 28, the Regional Meteorological Centre forecasts rain and thunderstorms across several districts. An orange alert has been issued for April 28 and 29 for various districts, warning of lightning, hail, intense rainfall, and gusty winds.
This predicted meteorological activity is expected to bring down temperatures, offering much-needed respite from the current severe heat. Roorkee recorded the state's highest temperature at 41°C, while Pantnagar remained around 40°C for two consecutive days.
