Plains to Coast: Storms Unleash Fury
21 Jun
Summary
- Severe thunderstorms and flooding threaten millions across the central and eastern U.S.
- Damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes are expected through Sunday night.
- Flooding concerns are heightened in the South due to saturated soils.

Severe thunderstorms and widespread flooding are poised to impact millions across the central and eastern United States through the upcoming week. This persistent storm pattern, already responsible for significant severe weather and flash flooding throughout June, shows little sign of abating.
Communities from Oklahoma City to St. Louis face a renewed threat of severe weather, including damaging wind gusts, large hail, and tornadoes, through Sunday night. As a storm system moves eastward on Monday, the Interstate 95 corridor from Raleigh to Philadelphia will also be at risk for disruptive thunderstorms and localized flash flooding.
Further south, flooding concerns are particularly elevated. Recent heavy rainfall has left soils saturated and waterways high, increasing the likelihood of renewed flooding from even moderate additional rain. This follows a week of significant rainfall from both thunderstorm activity and former Tropical Rainstorm Arthur.
By mid-week, the focus of severe weather activity will shift back towards the Plains. Subtle disturbances interacting with warm, moisture-rich air will create daily opportunities for strong to severe storms from Tuesday through Thursday. Large hail and damaging winds, potentially reaching 85 mph, are the primary threats in this region, with continued localized flooding concerns due to the repetitive nature of the storms.
