US Megastorm: Blizzard, Severe Thunderstorms Brace for Impact
13 Mar
Summary
- A massive storm system is poised to strike the central Plains, Midwest, and East.
- Blizzard conditions are possible in Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota.
- The storm could evolve into a rare bomb cyclone with destructive winds.

A significant weather event, dubbed a 'megastorm,' is predicted to impact a vast area of the United States from Sunday into Monday. This sprawling system is forecast to move from the central Plains into the Midwest and East, potentially causing widespread travel disruptions and power outages.
Blizzard conditions, characterized by heavy snow and fierce winds, are a serious concern for parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, northern Illinois, and southeastern Minnesota. Meteorologists warn of dangerous whiteout conditions in these regions.
Concurrently, a strong line of thunderstorms is expected to develop along the storm's advancing Arctic cold front. These storms could bring torrential rain, damaging winds, and hail to areas farther south and east.
There is a possibility that this storm could intensify rapidly into a 'bomb cyclone,' a rare phenomenon where atmospheric pressure drops significantly, leading to widespread and destructive winds. AccuWeather meteorologists highlighted that central pressure drops of at least 24 millibars in 24 hours define such a rapid strengthening.
The storm is expected to draw moisture from multiple sources, including the Pacific, Gulf, and Atlantic, affecting areas home to nearly 200 million people. The most hazardous winter weather is anticipated in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region on Monday, with temperatures potentially in the teens and single digits, and AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures near or below zero.
Major metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston may experience flight delays or cancellations. Following the storm, a powerful Arctic cold front will bring plunging temperatures across the Plains and Midwest, spreading eastward.
