UK Braces for Arctic Blast: Snow & Ice Warnings Issued
5 Jan
Summary
- Arctic air brings snow showers and ice to Scotland, Northern Ireland, and parts of England.
- Temperatures will reach -2C in Scotland and 1-3C elsewhere, with icy stretches expected.
- Milder conditions arrive Tuesday, with potential for hill snow in Scotland and northern England.

Cold Arctic air is currently dominating weather patterns across the entire UK, bringing with it snow showers and icy conditions. Regions most exposed to northerly winds, including northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, west Wales, south-west England, and parts of eastern England, are bracing for further snowfall. The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow and ice in these areas, highlighting the risks of hazardous travel. While some locales will experience dry spells with wintry sunshine, the pervasive cold will be felt everywhere, with temperatures dipping to as low as -2C in Scotland and a typical 1-3C across the rest of the country.
As the afternoon and evening progress, most of the snow flurries are expected to diminish. This will usher in a cold night characterised by a sharp frost and widespread ice. Looking ahead to Tuesday, a slight moderation in temperatures is anticipated. However, higher elevations in Scotland and northern England could still experience some snowfall. A new weather system is also predicted to arrive later on Tuesday and into the night, bringing rain, sleet, and hill snow to the southern half of the UK.
