UK Braces for Snow After Storms Batter Nation
28 Oct
Summary
- First snow flurries anticipated this week following recent storms.
- El Niño's impact may bring freezing temperatures as early as November.
- A weakened polar vortex could send Arctic air plunging south.

The United Kingdom is anticipating its first snow flurries this week, marking a stark contrast to the recent severe weather. Following the passage of Storms Austen and Boelo, which brought gale-force winds and significant disruption, temperatures are set to drop considerably.
Parts of the Central Highlands in Scotland are forecast to experience light snow on elevated ground between 2am and 3:30am on Wednesday. This prediction comes after a yellow weather warning for wind was issued across most of Scotland, lasting until Tuesday evening.
Further complicating the weather outlook, the El Niño phenomenon is predicted to cause freezing temperatures in the UK as early as November. Experts suggest El Niño's disruption of the stratospheric polar vortex could weaken the jet stream, allowing Arctic air to sweep southward.
This forecast follows a deadly storm season, with one fatality reported from a falling tree in Dumfries and Galloway. Thousands of homes lost power, and several schools closed due to the outages. Last year, early snow fell on October 25, and a subsequent amber warning brought heavy snow and icy conditions, with temperatures dropping to -12.6C.
