UK Braces for Multi-Hazard Storm: Snow, Ice, and 70mph Winds Expected
7 Jan
Summary
- Storm Goretti to bring snow, rain, and strong winds across England and Wales.
- Up to 20cm of snow possible in Wales, with 70mph gusts hitting southwest England.
- Temperatures have plunged to -12.5°C, triggering amber cold health alerts.

A potent storm, named Goretti by French meteorologists, is poised to strike southern Britain on Thursday and Friday. This weather system is anticipated to unleash a multi-hazard event, with snow expected on its northern edge and rain and severe winds dominating the southern areas. Dangerous conditions are also forecast along the English Channel and in northern France.
As a result, the Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow across Wales and central/eastern England, with accumulations potentially reaching 20 centimeters, particularly in higher ground. Simultaneously, a yellow wind warning is in effect for southwest England, predicting gusts of up to 70 miles per hour that could cause snowdrifts.
These developing conditions follow an extended period of severe cold, which has seen temperatures plummet to -12.5 degrees Celsius. The persistent chill prompted amber cold health alerts across England, highlighting risks to health and social care services, especially for the elderly and vulnerable.
