The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow impacting north-west Scotland, commencing at 3pm on Saturday and continuing until 6am on Sunday. Forecasts indicate potential accumulations of up to 20cm of snow, alongside a risk of flooding due to anticipated rainfall. Concurrently, strong winds are expected across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
In response to the severe weather forecast, energy provider British Gas has published preparedness guidance for households. Recommendations include enhancing home insulation, weatherproofing window and door gaps, and insulating exposed pipes to prevent freezing. Testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors is also advised.
British Gas further suggests preparing for potential heating disruptions by keeping warm blankets and clothing readily available. An emergency kit with at least three days' worth of non-perishable food, water, medicines, and essential supplies like torches and chargers is recommended. Vehicle owners are urged to check brakes, heaters, tyres, and wipers.
The company also stresses the importance of community support, advising people to plan communication methods with household members and to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to ensure their well-being during the cold snap.
