UK Braces for 70mm Rain: Flood Warnings Issued
13 Jan
Summary
- Yellow rain warning issued for southern UK on Thursday.
- Up to 70mm of rain may fall on already saturated ground.
- Flood warnings and alerts are currently in place across England.

A yellow weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for southern England on Thursday, January 16, 2026. Forecasters predict up to 70mm of rain could fall, exacerbating flooding concerns on ground already saturated from recent storms like Goretti. The warning is in effect from 9 am until the end of the day, covering London, the South East, South West, parts of Wales, and the West Midlands.
The Met Office anticipates 20-40mm of rain widely, with isolated spots potentially receiving 40-70mm, particularly in southwest England. Residents are advised to check flood risk for their properties and prepare emergency kits. Currently, the Environment Agency has three flood warnings and 40 flood alerts active across England.
Additionally, a yellow warning for ice covers much of western and northern Scotland from Tuesday evening, January 14, to Wednesday morning, January 15, 2026. This is due to melting snow and recent rainfall meeting cold Arctic air. Further rain is forecast throughout the week, with temperatures varying across the UK.
