UK Weather: Endless Rain Drenches Britain in 2026

Residents of south-west England and South Wales have faced a continuous deluge, with rain recorded daily throughout 2026. January proved exceptionally wet, exceeding average rainfall by 50% and marking the 12th wettest on record for the region. The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning for Thursday and Friday across parts of Wales and England, anticipating potential surface water flooding due to saturated ground.

Meanwhile, Aberdeen is enduring its longest period without sunshine since records began in 1957, with two weeks of gloom expected to persist. Additional weather warnings include a yellow warning for Northern Ireland and a snow warning for various parts of northern and central England. These persistent weather patterns are attributed to a large area of high pressure blocking the movement of low-pressure systems.

Further rain bands are expected to move northwards, bringing heavy bursts throughout Friday and continuing into Saturday morning across the south and into Wales and the Midlands. While some brightness may appear in East Anglia and southeast England on Saturday, Sunday is forecast to be drier only for northern and eastern areas. Those in the southern and western UK will likely see yet another band of rain arrive. The jet stream's southerly position is also contributing to exceptional wet weather in Spain and Portugal.
