Arctic conditions are set to return to the UK, with forecasts indicating heavy snowfall and extreme cold before the end of January. Several regions could see blizzards, dumping up to 50cm of snow in isolated spots. Scotland faces the harshest temperatures, potentially dropping to -13C, while much of the nation could experience lows of -4C.
WXCharts projections suggest snowfall rates of up to 10mm per hour on January 29, with accumulations reaching 30cm across England and up to 23cm in the north-west. Northern Scotland, already impacted by Storm Goretti, might see snow depths of 50cm. These predictions come after a recent multi-hazard event that brought winds up to 99mph.
The Met Office acknowledges the increasing likelihood of colder weather and snow later in January. While initially milder Atlantic air is expected, a shift towards higher pressure from the east could usher in colder conditions, raising the chance of snow across parts of the country.
