UK Grimly Braces for More Blizzard Chaos
20 Nov
Summary
- Motorists were stranded as blizzards swept across the North York Moors.
- An amber weather warning for snow is in effect for the North York Moors.
- Temperatures could plunge to -12C in parts of Scotland by Friday.

Fresh travel chaos is anticipated as blizzards and an Arctic blast have blanketed much of Britain, with temperatures plummeting below zero. Yesterday's severe weather trapped numerous drivers in snow-choked roads, with the A171 near Whitby being particularly affected by crashes and impassable conditions. The North York Moors remain under an amber weather warning for snow, with predictions of up to 25cm accumulation on higher ground.
Further yellow warnings for snow and ice are impacting various regions across the UK, including the north-east coast, Cornwall, Devon, and western Wales. National Rail has cautioned passengers about potential speed restrictions, cancellations, and delays. As the cold spell persists, rural communities within the amber zone are at risk of becoming cut off due to gusty winds that could create blizzard conditions.
The forecast indicates that while temperatures may rise closer to seasonal averages by the weekend with the arrival of wetter weather, the current deep freeze is set to continue. Overnight lows of -6C are expected in northern rural areas, with a possibility of temperatures dropping to -12C in parts of Scotland. Ice is also a significant hazard, especially during overnight periods, creating treacherous travel conditions.
