Summary
- Temperatures plunged to -11C overnight, causing widespread travel disruptions.

- Hundreds of schools closed due to amber cold health alerts for vulnerable populations.
Wintry conditions have gripped Britain as temperatures plummet, with overnight lows reaching a severe -11C in some areas. This frigid blast has triggered significant travel chaos, grounding hundreds of flights at Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon airports and impacting road and rail services.
Forecasters predict the cold snap will continue, with a substantial snow event anticipated. A 240-mile corridor stretching from Swansea to Norwich is expected to accumulate up to 10.6 inches of snow by Friday, with Wales, particularly the Brecon Beacons National Park, bracing for the deepest snowfall.
The extreme cold has prompted the closure of hundreds of schools. The UK Health Security Agency has issued Amber Cold Health Alerts across England, urging caution for vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, as snow showers and ice are expected to persist.
