El Niño, a natural climate pattern occurring every two to seven years, typically brings wetter and stormier conditions to north-west Europe during late autumn and early winter.
The Met Office has already signaled potential for increased rainfall and storminess in the UK, particularly in November and December. This foresight is informed by past events, such as the severe flooding experienced during the strong El Niño of winter 2015-2016, which experts described as the most extreme on record.
