23 Jun
Summary
- Extreme heat prompts partial school closures across Devon, Cornwall, and Channel Islands.
- UKHSA issues red heat health alert for the South West, active from Wednesday to Thursday.
- Train services warn of delays and reduced schedules due to heat-related rail expansion.

Extreme heat is causing partial school closures across Devon, Cornwall, and the Channel Islands. Temperatures are expected to surpass 30C, leading the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to issue a red heat health alert for the South West, effective from Wednesday to Thursday. Several schools have announced early closures or relaxed uniform policies to ensure student comfort.
This heatwave is placing significant pressure on water resources, with South West Water advising conservation measures. Reservoir levels are currently at 82%. Farmers are also facing challenges related to livestock, crop yields, and worker safety. Wildlife, particularly aquatic life, may be affected by lower river flow levels and an increased risk of algal blooms.
Transportation is also impacted, as Great Western Railway and South Western Railway have cautioned passengers to travel only if necessary. The extreme heat can cause rail expansion and buckling, necessitating slower train speeds and potential service reductions. A Severe Weather Emergency Protocol has been activated in Cornwall to assist rough sleepers.
