UK Braces for Flooding as Yellow Rain Warnings Issued
6 Feb
Summary
- Yellow weather warnings for rain are in effect across parts of the UK.
- Saturated ground in southern England and Wales increases flood risk.
- Northern Ireland experienced its wettest January in 149 years.

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for rain across the UK, forecasting potential flooding and travel disruption. Heavy downpours are anticipated from 5 am to 9 pm on Friday in areas including Hampshire, West Sussex, Cornwall, Devon, parts of Wales, and Herefordshire. Saturated ground, particularly in southern England and Wales due to consistent rainfall this year, makes surface water flooding highly likely.
Separate warnings are also in place for Northern Ireland until midnight on Friday, anticipating heavy rain that could lead to flooding and travel issues. This persistent wet weather means rain has been recorded somewhere in the UK every day of the year so far, totaling 36 consecutive days. January was particularly wet, with Northern Ireland experiencing its second-wettest January on record, dating back 149 years.
Storm Chandra brought record rainfall to numerous UK sites in late January. For instance, Katesbridge in County Down recorded 100.8mm of rain on January 26th. Other locations like Dunkeswell Aerodrome in Devon also saw significant rainfall, surpassing previous daily records. The forecast indicates continued unsettled weather with showers and heavier bursts expected through the weekend and into early next week.
