UK Braces for Cold Snap: White Christmas Possible?

The Met Office has issued its Christmas Day forecast, predicting plummeting temperatures across Britain. Highs are expected to reach a maximum of only 7C anywhere in the UK, a considerable drop from recent milder conditions. This colder, drier spell brings a slight possibility of wintry flurries, particularly along the south coast of England, though significant snow accumulation is not anticipated.

While a 'White Christmas' is declared if a single snowflake falls, substantial snowfall across the country last occurred in 2010. The forecast anticipates chilly weather for most, with brightness expected in western areas. Over the Christmas period, high pressure is likely to bring more settled conditions, increasing the risk of overnight frost and fog where skies are clear.

In the meantime, 25 'act now' flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency due to recent heavy rainfall causing river levels to exceed capacity. These warnings are concentrated in the south and southwest, with specific concerns for areas along the River Derwent and the Lake District.
