Atlantic Storm Watch: Cristobal Could Form This Week

A tropical disturbance currently traversing the Atlantic Ocean is being closely monitored for potential development into the season's third named storm, Cristobal. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center have assigned a high, 70 percent probability for cyclone formation within the next week. Environmental conditions are expected to become more conducive for development over the coming days as the system moves westward to west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic.

Meteorologists suggest that if the system organizes sufficiently, it could reach tropical depression or low-end tropical storm strength. However, significant hurdles remain, including surrounding dry air and increased wind shear, particularly as the system approaches the northern Lesser Antilles later this week and into early next week. These factors are anticipated to limit strengthening, and there's a possibility the disturbance could be disrupted.

While the storm's path remains uncertain, current assessments indicate a low risk of direct impacts on the United States. If the system strengthens significantly, it is more likely to track north into the open Atlantic. Should it remain weaker, a closer approach to the Southeast coast is possible, but expected wind shear would likely disrupt it. Another disturbance northeast of Bermuda has a low development risk and is expected to halt development soon.
