Bertha Brewing: TN Braces for Separate Severe Weather

A tropical depression that emerged in the Gulf on July 19 is projected to intensify into Tropical Storm Bertha. As of the morning of July 20, the system was located approximately 110 miles south of Panama City, Florida, with maximum sustained winds near 35 mph. Forecasters anticipate gradual strengthening, with Bertha expected to become a tropical storm later on July 20.

Tropical storm conditions may affect the Florida Panhandle and Alabama Gulf Coast from July 20 into July 21. Heavy rainfall and potential storm surge are concerns for southern Alabama, with expected totals of two to four inches, possibly up to six inches in isolated areas. A storm surge watch is in effect near the Alabama-Florida border.

Despite Bertha's proximity, Tennessee is not expected to experience its direct impact. The state is forecast to remain clear as Bertha tracks west along the Gulf Coast. However, Tennessee faces an elevated risk of its own severe weather from July 21 through early July 22.

The National Weather Service has designated a Level 2 of 5 risk for severe weather in northern Tennessee and a Level 1 of 5 risk for southern Tennessee, with potential for the Level 2 risk to expand statewide. Damaging winds, flash flooding, and isolated tornadoes are primary concerns for this separate weather event.
