The Atlantic hurricane season officially began with the formation of Tropical Storm Arthur off the Gulf Coast of Texas on Wednesday. This marks the first named storm of the season. Arthur is predicted to strengthen briefly before moving inland, tracking northeastward along the Texas coast into southern Louisiana.
Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center have issued warnings for significant impacts across a broad area of the southeastern United States. Heavy rainfall, potentially reaching 5 to 10 inches, is anticipated in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle. Coastal areas could experience storm surges up to 4 feet above normal levels, accompanied by large and dangerous waves.
Life-threatening flooding and powerful winds are expected in the warning zones, which stretch from Sabine Pass, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana. A tropical storm watch is also in effect for areas between Sargent, Texas, and Sabine Pass. Beyond these immediate threats, the storm is projected to create hazardous surf and rip current conditions along the northwestern Gulf Coast. Some tornadoes may also develop as a result of the storm's passage.
