Trichy Roads Drown in Monsoon Rain
16 Oct
Summary
- Trichy experienced waterlogging on city roads after monsoon rainfall.
- Solid waste and plastic bottles clogged drains, causing inundations.
- Corporation officials removed waste, leading to receding water levels.
Trichy city faced significant waterlogging on its roads just two days after the onset of the northeast monsoon. Moderate rainfall experienced on Thursday night led to submerged streets in various parts of the city, including low-lying areas. Major roads in Cantonment, Thillai Nagar, Thennur, and Palakkarai, as well as outskirts like Samayapuram, experienced substantial rainfall. Golden Rock recorded 3.6cm, Trichy town 2.5cm, and the railway station and airport registered 2.3cm and 1.2cm respectively by Friday morning. Key thoroughfares such as Thillai Nagar Main Road and McDonald's Road were severely impacted, making commuting difficult, especially for two-wheeler riders who faced poor visibility due to submerged carriageways and power cuts. One commuter described a sense of panic as rainwater completely covered the road. Corporation officials cited solid waste and plastic bottles as the primary culprits for clogging the stormwater drains. They stated that immediate removal of accumulated waste by sanitation workers led to a rapid recession of floodwaters, noting that most drains had been desilted prior to the monsoon.
Commuters expressed distress over the situation. A BPO worker shared her experience of navigating darkened, waterlogged roads near Thillai Nagar, highlighting the panic induced by the complete submersion of the carriageway. Despite drains being present on some roads, their effectiveness was compromised by blockages. Officials confirmed that timely clearing of waste from stormwater drains was crucial in resolving the inundations within minutes. The swift action by sanitation teams ensured that the disruptions caused by the initial monsoon spell were temporary.
