Cold weather shelters are opening across the Treasure Coast this week in response to dropping temperatures. In Vero Beach, The Salvation Army at 2655 Fifth St. SW will offer shelter on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23, opening at 7 p.m. and closing at 7 a.m. the following morning.
Fort Pierce residents can find shelter at the Percy Peek Gym, located at 2902 Avenue D. This facility plans to open from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Feb. 22, Feb. 23, and Feb. 24. These shelters typically activate when temperatures are projected to fall below 40 degrees for an extended period.
City officials in Fort Pierce have released safety guidelines to help residents prepare. These recommendations cover protecting people by limiting outdoor exposure and dressing in layers, safeguarding pets by bringing them indoors, securing pipes and property against freezing, and using space heaters safely by keeping them away from flammable materials and unplugging them when not in use. Fire safety, including avoiding outdoor burning and maintaining clear spaces around grills, is also emphasized.
