Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Southern California, Drivers Urged to Use Caution

On Monday, October 14, 2025, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for four counties in Southern California: Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. The watch is in effect from 11 PM on October 13 until 6 AM on October 14.

Lightning strikes are a significant threat during thunderstorms, with the United States experiencing around 25 million lightning strikes annually, mostly during the summer months. These lightning strikes claim the lives of approximately 20 people each year. The danger from lightning is greatest when the storm is directly overhead and gradually diminishes as the storm moves away.

Heavy rainfall can also create hazardous driving conditions. Drivers are advised to slow down, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid outer lanes, where water tends to accumulate, leading to the risk of hydroplaning. Visibility can also be severely reduced, and motorists should turn on their headlights and be cautious of other vehicles, especially large trucks and buses, which can spray water and reduce visibility further.
