Thailand braces for heavier rains, flash flood risks grow
17 May
Summary
- Heavier rains and isolated heavy downpours are forecast across Thailand.
- Flash floods and run-off risks are high, especially near waterways and foothills.
- Strong winds will affect the Andaman Sea with waves reaching 2-3 meters.

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning for increased rainfall across Thailand, commencing Saturday, May 16. Heavy downpours are anticipated in numerous regions, with a particular focus on the North and Northeast. These conditions are attributed to the prevailing southwest monsoon.
Residents in affected areas are advised to exercise caution due to the potential for severe weather. Accumulated heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods and run-off, posing risks along waterways, near foothills, and in low-lying areas. Farmers are also encouraged to take measures to protect their crops and livestock.
Additionally, strong winds are forecast for the Andaman Sea. Waves in the northern part of the Andaman Sea are expected to reach 2-3 meters and could exceed 3 meters during thundershowers. Vessels are cautioned to navigate carefully, with small boats in the upper Andaman Sea advised to remain ashore.
