The Meteorological Department has issued an orange and yellow alert across Tamil Nadu due to a deep depression forming in the Bay of Bengal. This weather system is expected to bring significant rainfall, with an orange alert specifically for Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore districts, along with Puducherry and Karaikal.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted for Tamil Nadu on January 10, followed by heavy rainfall on January 11. Chennai and neighboring districts are under a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning. The depression is currently located about 550 km south-southeast of Chennai.
Authorities have warned of squally weather with winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, likely persisting until the evening of January 10. A specific warning is also in place for fishermen in the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining areas along the Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts.
