Monsoon Alert: Five TN Districts Announce School Holiday
21 Oct
Summary
- Schools in five Tamil Nadu districts closed for a day due to heavy monsoon.
- Northeast monsoon has intensified, prompting precautionary school closures.
- Heavy rainfall is predicted to continue across Tamil Nadu until October 26.

Schools in Chennai and the neighboring districts of Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Ranipet were closed on Wednesday, October 21, due to continuous heavy rainfall from the intensifying northeast monsoon.
This precautionary closure was announced by District Collectors to ensure the safety of students and staff, considering potential transportation disruptions and hazardous road conditions caused by persistent downpours.
Chennai experienced significant overnight rainfall, prompting an orange alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD forecasts that heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until October 26, with a low-pressure area likely forming over the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has also predicted isolated heavy rainfall in other regions, including Lakshadweep, Kerala, Mahe, and South Interior Karnataka, over the coming days. Residents are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and official announcements.
