Tamil Nadu Swelters: June Nights Hottest This Decade
4 Jul
Summary
- June was Tamil Nadu's second warmest this decade, with average temps 1.1°C above normal.
- Nighttime temperatures were exceptionally warm, marking the second highest minimums.
- Climate change and urban heat islands contribute to persistent nocturnal warming.

Last month, Tamil Nadu experienced its second warmest June on record this decade, with persistent warmth extending through the nights. The state's average monthly temperature reached 29.7 degrees Celsius, a notable 1.1 degrees Celsius above the normal June average. This period was characterized by elevated daytime temperatures and exceptionally warm night-time conditions, making it one of the most thermally stressful Junes since 2015.
June this year recorded the second highest average minimum temperature in the state since 2015, at 24.9 degrees Celsius, nearly a degree above normal. While daytime temperatures, averaging 34.5 degrees Celsius, were high, they did not reach the peaks seen in 2019 and 2023. However, the consistency of warm nights, particularly in north, central, and south Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruchi, and Palayamkottai, made the month exceptionally uncomfortable.
Meteorologists attribute the enhanced nocturnal warming to a combination of factors. These include the urban heat island effect, diminished sea breeze, warmer sea surface temperatures, and the broader impacts of climate change. This warming trend has been observed since the early 2000s, indicating a significant shift in the region's climate patterns.
