SWFL Weather: Mild 4th, But Warm Seas Fuel Storms

Forecasters predict moderate temperatures for the 250th anniversary of the United States in the Fort Myers-Naples area. Highs are expected to hover around 91-92 degrees Fahrenheit. Southwest Florida's summer climate is often moderated by oceanic breezes and cloud cover, keeping temperatures lower than much of the nation, where triple-digit highs are more common.
Despite mild July 4th forecasts, oceanic conditions present concerns. Gulf water temperatures are already at 89 degrees, significantly above the usual 83-85 degrees. This warm water, combined with deeper warmth, provides ample energy for hurricanes and tropical storms. Meteorologists note that low wind shear is also a favorable condition for storm development.
Compounding these conditions, Lee and Collier counties remain in severe or extreme drought. Significant rainfall, approximately 3 feet over the next three months, is needed to alleviate the drought conditions. While June was drier than normal, a moisture plume is expected to increase rainfall totals, though storms may be spotty and heavy.
